Indianapolis - Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting death of a person on the city's east side.

Police were called to the 4600 block of East 35th Street around 9:00 am Tuesday.

Witnesses told them that several shots were fired in the area. Officers walking on foot discovered a man between two houses suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim, who was later identified as 41-year-old Robert Surratt of Indianapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paul Bird was outside with his dogs when he heard around five shots fired. He called 911 immediately.

"I just knew that with the type of round that I heard - the pop-pop-pop-pop-pop - that somebody was definitely firing a shot at somebody. You pretty much know when you hear shots like that that they're firing at somebody rather than just shooting the gun off," he said.

Bird said he was staying at a friend's house nearby and added that his friend was shot in his driveway in January. "Ever since then, I'm just vigilant, basically. The bottom line is, is he found a decent, cheap house that he redid and he moved into this neighborhood. Just get sick of all the riff-raff."

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Indianapolis Metropolitan Homicide detectives at 317.327.3475 or CRIME STOPPERS at 317.262.TIPS (8477).
