BATESVILLE - A southern Indiana teenager died over the weekend after an apparent drug overdose.
According to WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, Cierra Adams of Batesville died Saturday, on her 18th birthday. The television station reports it is believed that Adams was driven to Cincinnati to buy heroin and later died at a friend's home in Batesville.
Adams' mother, Karen, is now sharing a message that drugs aren't a big city problem, it can happen anywhere.
"I'm not a stupid parent. I talked to her a lot about drugs, especially things like heroin," Karen Adams said. "We thought we were doing everything we could, but it wasn't enough."
She believes heroin is a problem in Batesville as it is in many places.
"You think you're safe in a little, small town, but people walk around with blinders on, not knowing what's going on," she said.
Family friend Brenda Werner had a son serve prison time for drug use. He now goes to schools with a message.
"If you keep doing something like this, you are going to end up behind bars, or you're going to be dead," Werner said.
Funeral services will be held Thursday for Adams, who would have been a senior at Batesville High School this fall. Results from an autopsy and toxicology tests won't be available for weeks, WLWT reported.
