PENDLETON - An inmate at the Pendleton Correctional Facility was stabbed to death in an attack Saturday morning.

Officials at the facility say 35-year-old Daniel Dewitt of Columbus died around 8 a.m. at Saint John's Hospital in Anderson. He was attacked by two offenders around 6:30 a.m. Saturday when offenders housed in the facility's "H" cell house were being released to the gym for recreation.

Two suspects, both offenders at the prison, have been identified and placed in segregation as the investigation continues into the attack. The maximum security portion of the prison is on lockdown and visits are being suspended until further notice. The minimum security dorms continue to operate normally.

Dewitt was six months into a 17-year sentence for dealing in a controlled substance and a ten-year sentence for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
