2 Indiana women lose parts of legs in cycle crash

Updated:

SILVER LAKE (AP) - Investigators say a bystander to a car-motorcycle crash might have saved the lives of two northern Indiana women when he applied tourniquets after each lost part of their lower left legs.

44-year-old Terri Penrod and 53-year-old Sue Raber were both listed in serious condition at Fort Wayne Parkview Hospital Thursday following the crash Wednesday on Indiana 14 in southern Kosciusko County. Both are from Silver Lake, about 40 miles west of Fort Wayne.

Investigators say Penrod was driving her motorcycle with Raber as a passenger when it was struck by a car while making a left turn.

21-year-old Stephen Wilson of Mexico, Ind., witnessed the crash and placed tourniquets on both women's left legs.  Investigators told the Journal Gazette Wilson possibly saved both women from bleeding to death.
