INDIANAPOLIS - A teenager pleaded guilty Wednesday in the shooting of nine people on a crowded downtown street during the 2010 Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration.

Shamus Patton, who was 17 at the time of the shooting incident, pleaded guilty to six counts of battery, criminal recklessness, criminal gang activity and carrying a handgun without a license.

As part of the agreement, the state will drop the criminal gang enhancement. Sentencing will not exceed ten years.

Patton's sentencing hearing is set for Aug. 3rd.

Patton's mother maintained her son's innocence in an interview with Eyewitness News last summer, but offered an apology to the victims.

Investigators say Patton opened fire downtown during Summer Celebration in July 2010. The gunfire sent thousands of people running for safety. Prosecutors say Patton's bullets hit several people in two shooting incidents.

Prosecutors believe Patton went to the Steak and Shake to settle differences with rival gang members.
