MADISON - Four people were reportedly injured in an accident at the Madison Regatta Sunday.
The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., reports Brian Perkins, the driver of the U-21 Miss Lakeridge Paving, collided with a safety rescue boat about 3 p.m. Sunday.
NBC affiliate WAVE-TV in Louisville is reporting three people were aboard the rescue boat when it was struck. Race officials say two of the victims were taken to King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. A spokeswoman said the hospital was treating two people and both were in stable condition.
Michael Brand, 46, of Middletown, Ohio, was treated for lacerations.
The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports two others injured in Sunday's crash were flown to University Hospital in Louisville. They have been identified as 31-year-old Chris Cutshall of Madison, who is in critical condition and 34-year-old Angela Greenwell of Louisville, who is in serious but stable condition.
The accident occurred shortly after Perkins' boat missed a buoy and was back tracking at slow speed to return to the race course when it collided with the safety boat. The 26-year-old Perkins, who's from Black Diamond, Wash., was not injured.
Forrest Lucas, founder of Lucas Oil, was at the regatta and witnessed the crash.
"Well, I think what happened, the safety boat kind of drifted out of its safe zone and the race boat cut a corner and kind of went sideways, decided he'd cut back across and get back on the circuit again and just happened to run over, because you can't see around the corner and it was just a pure accident, absolutely pure accident, that probably wouldn't happen again in a million years," Lucas said.
