Two Indianapolis women hurt in US 31 crash

Updated:

HAMILTON COUNTY - A woman was airlifted to the hospital following a serious crash near the Hamilton-Tipton county line.

The crash happened around 10:15 p.m. at 296th Street and U.S. 31. Police say a group of four vans was traveling north on U.S. 31 when one of the vans began weaving for an undetermined reason. The driver of the van lost control and struck a culvert, causing the van to roll several times into a cornfield, coming to rest upside down, about 50 yards from the roadway.

Deputies from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department arrived on the scene and called for an air ambulance for one of the women in the van. She was flown to Methodist Hospital. The other woman in the van was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital on the north side of Indianapolis. Both women were in their 50s.

Police have not determined a cause of the accident, which occurred about five miles west of the town of Atlanta, but do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Both women injured in the accident are from Indianapolis. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.
