NASHVILLE - U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar is supporting a push to repeal federal sugar subsidies, saying they were "concocted by law to favor a very few."

The Republican lawmaker made the comments Saturday during a stop at the Candy Dish, a Nashville confectionary that's a popular stop in the southern Indiana tourist town.

The Herald-Times of Bloomington reports that Lugar told a crowd at the store that Americans are paying almost twice as much for sugar than they would be if there were no subsidies.

He says subsidies that may have been justified in President Franklin Roosevelt's day no longer make sense and are a burden to U.S. consumers, small businesses and food manufacturers.

Lugar is facing a tough re-election battle in his bid for a seventh term in the Senate.
