INDIANAPOLIS -
Around 25 non-profit groups showed up at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway early Monday to clean up.
It's hard to believe, but there is a four-year waiting list to clean up other people's trash at the Speedway.
On Monday, the group from Delta High School's tennis team made their way through the refuse in the stands. Tim Cleland said, "Once you get the gig, you don't want to give it up, cause its great money."
Delta parent Sherri Spay commented on this year's garbage. "We still have a lot of chicken, but this years its been oranges and fruit," she said, "I don't know if they're trying to be healthier while they're drinking their beer or what."
Marc Thronburg, another Delta parent brought along his leaf blower. "I basically go through and blow everything out of the bleachers."
Cleland said it's obvious this year's crowd was huge. "Never has it been this tough. Both the heat and the huge crowd yesterday at the race. There's an unbelievable amount of trash. Unbelievable," he said.
Somebody's trash has turned into these students' treasure. There's money in the empty beer cans, but just how much depends on how many they can collect and turn in."
Tim Cleland put a dollar amount to it. "We're going to make 4-thousand dollars today," he said "In one day and you just can't beat that for a fundraiser for high school tennis."
It's hot work and with the sun beating down on the crew, there is a good chance of sunburn. But once the work is done there is a feeling of accomplishment and just one more thing to do according to Sherri Spay: "Can't wait to go home and take a shower."
