Indianapolis - There is no debating that roof repair is one of the most expensive home investments with simple roof designs costing several thousand dollars. In Indiana, roof damage is often the result of severe weather but normal wear and tear can also creep up unexpectedly.
"It might take some time before you notice it and it could lead to costly repairs, leaks in your house," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List, "poor ventilation could cause damaged shingles, shingles installed improperly could lead to leaking problems and further damage throughout your house."
Angie's List certified ABC Roofing has received calls from local consumers looking for a roof redo.
"We ask them, 'why don't you call the company that has done the roof for you recently?' and they say, 'well, we called their number and it's disconnected or we can't find them,'" said roofer Rod Standifer. "That tells me right away it's a storm chaser."
Storm chasers are companies that prey on consumers after severe storms but don't have to proper credentials.
"When you are looking for a roofer, it's important to work with a local, reputable company," Hicks said. "You want a company that is known in the area because your roof might last 10, 15 even 20 years and you want someone who is going to stand by their work."
It is also important to make sure the company isn't using inferior products and that the installation conforms to manufacturer's specifications. The warranties are only as good as the product and the installer.
"In most cases, four to six nails per shingle," Standifer said. "The wind warranties on the shingles are 110-130 miles per hour. You have to have ice water barrier in place, proper ventilation and proper insulation."
Also, make sure the company you choose is insured.
"In particular, you want them to have worker's compensation insurance because if something happens to one of their employees on your property and they don't have insurance it's potentially a claim against your homeowner's insurance," said Hicks.
Now, contracts can differ from one roofing contract to another. Make sure it includes cost, payment terms, start date, expected end date, job description, materials to be used and the length of warranty.
