BEDFORD - Several homes were destroyed or damaged when a tornado struck east of Bedford, and several minor injuries were reported.

The tornado touched down east of Bedford near Brown Station Road and US 50. That's near State Road 446.

Lawrence County EMA Director Valerie Luchauer told Eyewitness News that five homes were flattened on US 50 near Brown Station Road.

Eight people are confirmed injured. Two or three were children. All are going to be okay.

Firefighters are investigating a possible explosion with a possible electrocution, along with several gas leaks on the Lawrence/Jackson county line.

Emergency responders are staging at Chawswick Elementary in Bedford.

Reports are that several structures have been damaged. Injuries are being reported and hospitals are receiving patients from ambulance and personal transportation vehicles.

There are also reports of another touchdown of a tornado in Jackson County near the small town of Norman, IN. This is on or along State Road 58 near the Jackson/Lawrence County line.

Several officers in the area of the damage and state police, local law enforcement, emergency medical services and other civil defense agencies are responding to the area.

There were 16 state troopers working the area on the ground searching for injured parties. They are also looking for dangerous area due to power lines being possibly down or objects across the road.

One structure was reduced to a pile of timber. Several other homes were seriously damaged in what appeared to be the track of the tornado. Many trees were down in the area and a vehicle was left lying on its side next to a large tree.

Also, a tornado was reported on the ground in Bartholomew County between Columbus and Elizabethtown at around 9:08 pm.

Earlier, a tornado touchdown was confirmed near Norman in Jackson County.

A suspected tornado caused property damage in Greensburg, but there were no reports of injuries.

46,000 Duke Energy customers lost power.
