Madison - Indiana has fined a company that owns most of the former Jefferson Proving Grounds $132,000 for federal violations involving the removal and disposal of asbestos at the southern Indiana site.
The Madison Courier reports the Indiana Department of Labor found that Ford Lumber & Building Supply Inc. committed 16 violations when its workers removed asbestos insulation from hot water pipes from the site's buildings.
Indiana found that Ford Lumber failed to give workers respirators to protect them from the asbestos, which can cause lung cancer if inhaled, and allowed them to clean up using brooms and dust pans.
Indiana Labor Department spokeswoman Stephanie McFarland said the company has until May 30 to pay the fine or challenge it.
A Ford Lumber worker said Tuesday the company would have no comment.
