Second death reported from Tuesday house fire

Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS - A man has died from injuries sustained in a house fire on the Indianapolis southeast side Tuesday morning.

Jerry Richards, a 47-year-old quadriplegic, became trapped in the house in the 1100 block of State Avenue when it caught fire. His mother, 63-year-old Anna Richards, died Tuesday.

Richards' sister and her boyfriend also lived in the home. Mary Whitlock said they were unable to carry her brother to safety.

It only took firefighters a few minutes to respond to the 911 call, which came around 6:00 am Tuesday, but both Jerry and Anna Richards had already been seriously injured. Firefighters administered CPR at the scene.

Fire and police officials are still investigating the cause of the State Ave. fire that has now taken two lives. Of 11 fires in the past three days in Indianapolis, at least six have been ruled arson.

Anyone with information about any of the recent fires is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
