Feds lift detention orders for 5 arrested students

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS - An illegal immigrant arrested with four others at Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels' office said she didn't believe she'd be returned to her native Mexico, and it appears she might be right.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lifted detention orders Tuesday for 19-year-old Sayra Perez of Indianapolis and four other students jailed the day before on criminal trespassing charges. Their attorney had said earlier Tuesday he feared all five would face deportation hearings.

Perez said in a jail interview all five were on hunger strikes until they're released. One of the five had posted bail by Tuesday evening. All five face court hearings Wednesday.

The five were protesting two immigration bills that Daniels signed Tuesday. One denies in-state tuition at state-supported universities for illegal immigrants.
