AVON - Avon schools went on lockdown for about half an hour Monday morning while police investigated a disturbance at a residence.

It started at around 10:00 am. Nine of Avon's 12 schools were put on lockdown. The schools are all located south of State Road 36.

The school district says no students were in danger.

It took police about half an hour to get the situation under control. They were responding to a report of a man barricading himself inside a home.

Deputies with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department responded to the call in the 6900 block of East 100 South. A woman let them into the home and showed them to her son's room, where the man was barricaded.

Deputies opened the door, and the man fired two shotgun rounds at them. They returned fire and hit the suspect several times in the arm.

The suspect's mother was escorted out of the house safely while the SWAT team was called in to remove the man, who was later identified as Robert Summerlot, in his mid-fifties. Police say he lives with his mother.

Summerlot was taken into police custody and was treated at a hospital for his gunshot wounds. No one else was injured.
