LAWRENCE COUNTY - The possibility of more rain is bad news for those already dealing with high water and flooding. In Bedford, the water level has gone up since Monday but officials there feel that most residents are in the clear.

The front entrance to the West Baden resort was closed to traffic after water from French Lick Creek made it impassible. After being closed for two days due to high water, the hotel itself was open for business - if you could get there.

Joanne Leonard made the trip from Ohio over the weekend.

"We had rooms from the beginning, from Sunday but we couldn't get in, so we had to stay at French Lick," she said.

Not bad but nothing like the picturesque, historic West Baden Hotel.

If you've ever been to West Baden you're probably familiar with its formal English gardens. They were covered with water this week. But that's really the extent of it. In 2008, during the flooding they say the water came all the way up to the front steps of the hotel.

"We really didn't shut anything down. We moved a few guests over the French Lick not so much because we were concerned about the flooding of the hotel as much as them being able to get out if they wanted to leave," said Doug May, French Lick Resort.

Getting around town is still a challenge. The high water closed the main street in French Lick for much of the day, preventing a beer delivery truck from making its way to the nearby casino.

"We would try to find a way around but you have these hills and I'm not going to try to take the beer up there and take a chance of dropping the beer," said Shawn Mulcahy, Monarch Beverage.

So instead, the driver loaded up and turned around. The 2.5-hour trip down was for nothing, and he had another 2.5 hours to drive back to Indianapolis.

West Baden Springs Hotel is one of two historic hotels at French Lick Resort. Throughout this time period, its sister property French Lick Springs Hotel, as well as French Lick Casino, remained open for business. The Pete Dye and Donald Ross Courses at French Lick are also available as well as many of the resort's amenities.

Alternate route signs have been put into place and an access map is available here.

The flooding this week has hit southern counties the hardest, but it's not nearly as bad as the massive flooding back in June 2008.

Over a 24-hour period from June 6th to June 7th, thunderstorms dropped between 5 and nearly 11 inches south of Interstate 70. The highest recorded rainfall was in the town of Edinburgh in Johnson County, which got 10.9 inches of rain in seven hours.

By comparison, Lawrence and Jackson counties have gotten the most rain in the past week, but it amounts to 7 inches over the past 7 days.
