Boy killed in Kokomo crash; dozens of slide-offs reported

Kokomo - Two people died in separate crashes on icy roads Monday as a winter storm moved through north central Indiana.

The storm brought heavy rain to Indianapolis, while areas to the north saw freezing rain and ice. Indy Snow Force plow drivers were scheduled to work overnight Monday to prepare city streets for Tuesday morning's commute.

Indiana authorities are blaming icy road conditions for dozens of accidents, including a two-vehicle crash that killed a 9-year-old near Kokomo.

Indiana State Police patrol officers were busy through the day Monday dealing with crashes and spinoffs caused by freezing rain and snow in the northern part of the state. The Fort Wayne post handled 26 crashes and 35 slide-offs from midnight through 6:00 pm.

In Howard County, the sheriff's department says deputies responded to a fatal crash about 3:50 pm Monday.

The department says Rebekah Grant lost control of her car and collided with an oncoming pickup truck driven by Frederick Carbardi. The department says 9-year-old Skyler Grant was a passenger in Rebekah Grant's car and died at the scene. The drivers were taken to hospitals for examination.

An Anderson mother was killed on Scatterfield road when she lost control of her vehicle and slid into the path of an oncoming SUV. Police say the woman's two young children were in car seats. They were not seriously injured.

A semi truck jack-knifed on I-465 northbound near I-70 on the west side of Indianapolis earlier Monday night. The driver says he was cut off and slid, causing the semi's tank to rupture. Firefighters say it could have been much worse if the tank had been full. The crash shut down the northbound lanes for about two hours.

Temperatures fell from the high fifties Monday morning to the mid-thirties by the afternoon.

Duke Energy reported less than 300 outages Monday night.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for about six hours Monday for Carroll, Howard, Tipton, Madison, Delaware and Randolph Counties. That was lifted at 9:00 pm.

Minor accumulations of snow are possible overnight for the following counties:

Montgomery-Putnam-Hendricks-Marion-Hancock-Clay-Owen-Morgan-Johnson-Shelby-Rush-Greene-Monroe-Brown-Bartholomew-Decatur-Daviess-Martin-Lawrence-Jackson-Jennings.

For Clinton, Boone, Hamilton and Henry Counties, light freezing rain may develop Monday afternoon with minor snow accumulations possible.

For Warren and Tippecanoe Counties, some light freezing rain may develop Monday afternoon. Minor accumulations of snow are possible later, and lowland flooding is expected along portions of the Wabash River.
