Indiana hunters set record for third straight year

Updated:

Fort Wayne - Indiana deer hunters set a record for the third straight year despite a slight drop in hunting license sales.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says 134,004 deer were taken during the 2010 hunting season. That's a 1 percent increase over the previous year.

The 2010 total included a record 80,997 antlerless deer and 53,007 antlered deer, the second-highest antlered total in 60 years of regulated deer hunting in Indiana.

The Journal Gazette reports the biggest harvests were in the northeast Indiana corridor of Steuben, Noble and Kosciusko counties.

The firearms portion of season accounted for the largest harvest with more than 86,000 deer taken.
