Indianapolis - A professional football player was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest at a weekend shooting scene.

Police say San Diego Chargers wide receiver Legedu Naanee, 27, tried to walk through a crime scene that had been set up outside a downtown bar early Saturday morning. The crime scene was set up after two people were shot, one fatally, outside 6 Lounge.

Officers told Naanee to turn around and go the other direction, but he refused and swore at an officer several times. While Naanee was speaking, police say they detected "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on or about his breath and person" and had glassy, bloodshot eyes. He continued to refuse orders to walk away from the crime scene and was placed under arrest.

As an officer attempted to place Naanee in handcuffs, he resisted, bracing himself against a railing outside the Claddagh Irish Pub on S. Meridian Street. After several attempts to gain control, the officer reported that he sprayed pepper spray in Naanee's face.

Naanee continued to resist officers who tried to get him under control, even after he was placed on the ground. An officer struck Naanee in the right side twice with his knee, at which time he moved his arms and was able to be handcuffed. He was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest.

According to the police report, as Naanee was being walked to the officer's vehicle, he asked "Do you know who I am? I am an NFL player and I am going to sue your [expletive]." Three unidentified people, including men believed to be Naanee's friend and an agent, tried to explain the situation to the officer and asked to let Naanee go, explaining that the arrest was "going to ruin his career."

Naanee has played four seasons for the Chargers, catching 63 passes and three touchdowns. He had three catches for 38 yards in San Diego's win at Indianapolis November 28.

Both of the charges against Naanee are misdemeanors.
