Weather apps offer plenty of choices

Updated:

It seems like this year's winter weather has been wreaking havoc across the country much more than usual. Keeping on top of the latest forecast and conditions is at the top of everyone's daily to-do list.

There are plenty of weather apps. The problem is choosing the one that's right for you from the hundreds now available. You can now carry around a weather forecasting studio right on your mobile phone.

Weather Bug offers a free version with ads, or for 99 cents, an elite version with no ads. It works on all mobile phone platforms: Android, Blackberry, iPhone and delivers really nice live local weather forecasts, radar, and current condition reports, with alerts and animation and very easy to follow weather info.

The Accuweather folks have a great app you may want as well. It is heavy on graphics and gives a quick read on what it's like now and what's coming, though the ads can be pretty annoying.

For live radars anywhere in the country, there's the 99-cent US radars app. It does animated radars that are live enough that you can just about predict yourself when the snow will start in your neighborhood.

Finally, check out the 99-cent Live Cams app. Though not specifically a weather application, you can tune into hundreds of live webcams all over the world for a live look at on the scene weather conditions.

Be sure to check out WTHR's app, which includes weather info like live Doppler radar, regional radar, and school closings and delays.
