Despite population drop, Gary tops homicide rate

Updated:

Gary, Ind. - Gary's homicide rate rose in 2010 and placed the city once nicknamed the nation's murder capital back at the top of the FBI's list for murder rates in cities its size.

The Post-Tribune reports Gary had 54 violent deaths in 2010. That's up from 50 in 2009 and 40 in 2008.

Gary's per-capita murder rate topped the list of communities with populations of 50,000 and to 99,999 people in data reported in the FBI's Uniform Crime Report.

Police officers say they're frustrated by the rate and residents' unwillingness to help solve the crimes. Nearly half of Gary's 2010 homicides are still unsolved.
