Indianapolis - Thousands of runners and walkers braved the rain to help the homeless Thursday morning. It was the eighth annual Drumstick Dash, which benefits the Wheeler Mission in downtown Indianapolis.
The dash takes place in Broad Ripple, and gives participants a chance not only to help those who are struggling, but also a chance to work off some calories in anticipation of the Thanksgiving feast.
"Before eating for the rest of the day, just wanted to get in a little exercise," said one woman. "Temp's not bad. Rain's not bad. Looking forward to it. Looking forward to a good cause."
Runners got drenched Thursday morning as heavy rain moved in, but most were undaunted. The run benefits Wheeler Mission Ministries. It's their biggest fundraiser of the year.
"We're asked to donate canned goods to Wheeler Mission. It helps to food on the table for Thanksgiving Day," said another participant. "It's about gratitude."
"There's a lot of needy people out there, especially the times like they are now. A lot of people without work with the holidays coming in. This is a great cause and hope to raise money," said one man, who was running with his brother.
This year's dash was the biggest ever, with close to 12,000 people signed up to take part.
"We love it. We talked about it on the way down. Like they say, move your feet so others can eat," said one woman who brought her children along.
This year's event raised $200,000 for Wheeler Mission.
