Indianapolis - Police say a Marion County special deputy shot and killed a man who entered his home and opened fire.

The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. Tuesday  in the 3700 block of Celtic Drive, near 38th Street and Post Road.

Eyewitness News has learned a Marion County special deputy was playing cards in his garage with friends when a man entered the garage through a side door and fired a shot. The deputy pulled his service weapon and shot back.

"When the assailant comes in he says, 'everybody freeze' and as everybody stands up he fires a shot and at that time our deputy returns fire striking the assailant," said Deputy Chief Michael Turner, Marion County Sheriff's Department.

The man shot at the deputy two or three times and the deputy again returned several shots, striking the suspect. That is when the special deputy went to help the intruder.

"After the assailant went to the ground and the deputy secured the weapon from him so that there was no possibility of anyone else being shot, he did perform CPR on the assailant," Deputy Chief Turner said.

The intruder was later taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Investigators are still trying to figure out who the suspect was, where he came from and what he was after in the deputy's home.
