Indiana authorities warn about counterfeit money

Updated:

South Bend - Authorities in northern Indiana are warning residents to be on the lookout for counterfeit money.

The South Bend Tribune reports that police there have been alerted to a string of fake $100 and $20 bills. The phony bills have been found in the cash registers of gas stations and stores over the past two weeks.

Last week, police in Elkhart and Dowagiac, Michigan also reported the discovery of counterfeit $100 bills. South Bend police Capt. Phil Trent says it appears all the bills were generated from the same source. He says they all have the same serial number.

Police say the bills appear real at first glance, but can be detected as counterfeits through close inspection.
