Muncie - Alex Carder ran for three touchdowns and threw for fourth to lead Western Michigan past Ball State 45-16 Saturday.
Lewis Toler added a TD on an interception return and kicker John Potter scored from 8 yards out on a fourth-down play as the Broncos (2-3, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) ended a two-game losing streak.
Eric Williams had a 41-yard TD run for the Cardinals (2-4, 1-1), and Kelly Page found Otis Brown with a 15-yard scoring pass late in the game.
Carder scored on a 20-yard run shortly after Ball State fumbled the opening kickoff and had TD runs of 9 and 2 yards. He threw for 265 yards and connected with Juan Nunez on a 32-yard scoring play.
Toler intercepted a pass by Keith Wenning on Ball State's first play from scrimmage and returned it 24 yards as the Broncos took a 14-0 lead just 59 seconds into the game.
