Indianapolis - Six miles of I-70 on the west side have closed down.

I-65 northbound approaching downtown is still slow, but the major backup  has cleared since the morning rush.  At one point, there was a line of traffic that backed up south of I-465.

Crews have cleaned up accident on Raymond near the south split. Because of this east and westbound Raymond is very backed up.

As traffic diverts from I-70 to I-465 on the west side, I-465 is also seeing heavier than normal traffic.  There was also a crash on I-465 southbound that contributed to slower conditions in this area.

Traffic was also very heavy at I-465 and State Road 37 during the rush hour but has evened out.

Before I-70 even closed Thursday morning, there were backups heading into downtown. That is because crews had closed down I-70 to one lane and people were lining up to get through before the stretch was closed.

Eyewitness News has learned INDOT is taking this opportunity to get a jump on some roadwork.  While I-70 is shut down, road crews will be working on parts of the interstate that volunteers are not using.
