Indianapolis - Indiana has never had a female governor, but current Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman could be the first. She hasn't officially declared herself a candidate.

Eyewitness News asked Skillman if she had spoken to Gov. Mitch Daniels about running.

"I'll leave that conversation between the two of us. We have a very close relationship and have always shared a lot over the years," she said.

"Have you decided when you might make it?"

"There is plenty of time to sort out the future," she responded.

"So I will ask directly. Are you a candidate for governor?"

"I am seriously considering running for governor but there is still plenty of time to make that decision," said Skillman.

She says she's not going to let potential opponents be a factor in her decision.

"One shouldn't consider others' entry into the field as the determining factor. If you feel you are the best person to govern the state, if you feel you are the best person to make decisions on behalf of your particular area of the state then you move forward with that. I think 2010 has shown us that it's been a crazy period when individuals are in and then out overnight and the entire landscape can change without a moment's notice," she said.
