Judge blocks part of Indiana county health ordinance

Updated:

Fort Wayne - A federal judge has blocked part of a new county health ordinance in Indiana, saying it could potentially endanger the privacy of women who obtain abortions.

Backers say the new Allen County ordinance is aimed at regulating out-of-county providers of medical services.

Dr. George Klopfer runs an abortion clinic in Fort Wayne and filed a lawsuit saying the ordinance would unconstitutionally interfere with women's rights to obtain abortions.

Judge Robert L. Miller Jr. issued a preliminary injunction last week. It bars the county from requiring reporting of information that could identify patients.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health had no immediate comment Thursday.|
