Indianapolis - Tuesday's snowfall forced hundreds of schools to close, although the state's largest school district, Indianapolis Public Schools, stayed open. WTHR reported over 400 closings and delays.

The snow started early as predicted, covering city roads from Hamilton to Hendricks Counties.

"The roads are in good shape, slick but passable," said Curt Higginbotham, Hendricks County Department of Transportation.

Keeping speed down was key on city streets and on the interstates to avoid slide offs, like one at I-465 near Pendleton Pike.

Plow drivers put in a long night in Indianapolis as officials for the state's largest school district cleared the way for buses to run.

"You're going to delay school for a Super Bowl, but can't delay school for a snow day?" said one angry mother, referring to IPS' one-hour delay Monday after the Super Bowl, which caused controversy at the Department of Education.

Hundreds of schools closed, deeming the icy conditions too dicey. In some areas, accidents were inevitable. But for the most part, commuters considered it mild.

"I didn't have any problem at all," said one driver.

Although the timing couldn't have been worse for a snow storm, there were no interstates shut down, no accidents to tie up traffic and no reason for IPS to call a delay.

"We deemed it safe for students," said IPS spokesperson Mary Louise Bewley.

For the parents of some of those students who bared the elements waiting for the bus, it was not worth the risk.

"What if a car ran into a bus? My child could be on that bus. Any child could be on the bus," said one mom.

Round Two comes overnight, when another one to three inches will fall. Winds will pick up out of the west and will cause blowing and drifting on roads.
