NSF director to lead new Purdue research institute

Updated:

West Lafayette - Purdue University has tapped the current director of the National Science Foundation to lead the school's new Global Policy Research Institute.

Arden Bement has been director of the National Science Foundation since 2004, when he was appointed to that post by former President George W. Bush.

Purdue announced Thursday that he will assume his post as director of its new institute on June 1. Arden is a former Purdue nuclear engineering professor and department head.

As the director of Purdue's Global Policy Research Institute, he will help guide its work developing nonpartisan, evidence-based public information on a wide range of issues.

Those will include homeland security, global food production and cancer treatment. The new institute will also offer advanced learning programs for students in public policy.
