Indianapolis - A young woman was killed in a hit and run accident late Saturday night on the east side. Police made an arrest in the case.

Police say 18-year-old Michelle Reed died Sunday morning at Riley Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash in the 100 block of South Fenton Avenue around 11:30 Saturday night.

While investigators worked at the scene of the crash, they were notified a caller had information about the crash. Jennifer Spencer identified her brother, 21-year-old Ryan Spencer, as the possible driver in the accident.

"She stated that she initially didn't know anything about it, but later state she believed her brother had been involved in a hit and run accident," said IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson. "They did locate that vehicle a short distance away, confirmed the damage being consistent of a hit and run accident with a pedestrian and subsequently identified a 21-year-old male as the driver of that vehicle."

Police recovered Spencer's blue Pontiac in the 200 block of South Gale Street, then located Spencer at a residence on Barnhill Drive. He was taken to the scene and read his rights, but denied any knowledge of the crash, telling police he thought he struck a tree branch.

However, detectives say a friend of Spencer's told them the suspect told him he had hit someone after drinking and driving. Officers interviewing Spencer detected an odor of alcohol. He admitted to police he had been drinking, but changed his story multiple times about how much he had to drink.

Spencer was charged with failure to stop at an injury accident and operating a motor vehicle in an accident resulting in death.
