Free money from the government sounds too good to be true, but experts say you just have to know where to look for it.

Every year the government gives out millions of dollars to people for a lot of different uses. You can't use this to pay down debt. It has to be used for a purpose like going back to school.

"If you're interested in education grants, go to the Department of Education website. There's also a website, grants.gov, that has an awful lot of information about government grants and other programs that can get you some money," said Len Gordon, FTC regional administrator.

A quick search online can turn up millions of available dollars for things like volunteer programs and education. The latest stimulus package means even more money is out there.
