County to seek state aid for costly radio upgrades

Updated:

Fort Wayne, Ind. - An Indiana county facing millions of dollars in public safety radio upgrades says it wants the state to help it pay the cost.

A Federal Communications Commission decision to limit VHF radio frequencies is prompting Allen County and the city of Fort Wayne to spend $14 million to $25 million to upgrade the computer equipment that runs the radio system used by police, firefighters and paramedics.

County officials say they will ask state lawmakers to help fund the 911 improvements. One method being considered is raising the amount the agencies can receive from fees charged to telephone users.

FCC spokesman Robert Kenny says limiting frequencies allows more users on the VHF spectrum and reduces interference. Agencies must make the switch by January 2013.
