Hai "Howie" YuJeremy Brilliant/Eyewitness News
March 16th update: The Monroe County Prosecutor's Office confirms Hai Yu faces two counts of rape and one count of criminal confinement. Yu has an initial hearing Tuesday at 1:30 pm.
Bloomington - Police say they have video evidence linking an Indiana University student to the assault of a young woman on campus last week.
The student currently faces a felony confinement charge, but additional charges could be filed in the near future.
Hai Yu, who is known on campus by the name Howie, is currently in the Monroe County Jail on $250,000 bond. Yu told police he was trying to help a young woman get medical attention, but surveillance cameras revealed a much different story.
It was during a party last Thursday at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house where Howie Yu was spotted with the woman, who later told police she was sexually assaulted.
"We believe that she was sexually assaulted and there was a rape kit investigation done at that time," said Chief Jerry Minger, IU Police Department.
Yu was connected to the case because he was the person who called 911 requesting medical attention for the young woman. From there, police say, he became a person of interest and finally, the prime suspect.
According to court documents, a designated driver took Yu and the woman back to the Foster Quad dormitory complex.
"The two were not strangers but they were not involved in some way, so we're really still trying to work out the details of the relationship they may have had," said Minger.
Cameras at the Foster Magee dormitory added more eveidence to the police case. Police say cameras recorded images of Yu dragging "a [clothed] female into the west side door of Magee" and "…55 minutes later… dragging the female out the west door…the female had no clothes on from the waist down."
Yu was arrested at Indianapolis International Airport last week. Police say he was on his way to his home state of New York.
"We really can't determine now whether he was leaving as a result of the investigation or he was leaving as a result of spring break," said Chief Minger.
