Indianapolis- Spring break is underway across Indiana and there are some great "travel steals and deals" out there. In fact, it's cheaper to fly to Tokyo right now than California.
Travel agents say if you waited until now to make travel plans for spring break, you definitely have fewer options. The key is thinking "flexible" not "Florida"
Travel agents say, you'll pay top dollar right now for a ticket to the panhandle. In this recession, Airlines have cut back on the number of flights they're offering and this spring, more people are taking trips than last year. That's driving plane ticket prices to popular spring break destinations sky high.
Agents say, many of their clients are driving to Florida this year because they have found deals on hotels, but they remind their clients that Florida's weather this time of yea is hit or miss.
Agents say, sometimes the best vacations happen when they get creative and think within a few hours drive.
"One of the things that's always fun for children who want to do the water activities is to go to one of these big hotels, like the one in Cincinnati. They have a large hotel and there's one in Ohio and Michigan and you go there and it has all these water slides and people just go there and have a ball, said Alex Kutin, Travel Leaders Travel Agency owner.
Other random trips you can take at rock bottom prices right now include Japan. On Travelocity.com we found a flight from Indy to Tokyo for $579 including tax. Normally that flight is about $1,200 dollars.
If you're willing to take a short road trip to Chicago to catch a flight, you can go to Ireland, for less than a Florida vacation. Dooley Vacations is offering a 4 night package to Dublin for $499, that includes airfare and hotel.
On Sherman's travel.com we found a great romantic getaway. The Oceanfront Cabo Azul Resort is offering three to four night stays in its 1,200-square-foot one-bedroom luxury villas for just $599 per couple. That's 65 percent off their regular rates.
Travel agents say you can save a lot of money this spring break, by looking for package deals.
"We're finding real good deals on cruises these days. Not necessarily the seven night cruises but there are a lot of four and five night cruises that are exceptional deals right now and of course you get to go to somewhere exotic too like different islands which is always a lot of fun," Kutin said.
If you don't have a passport, but like the big city idea, BING.com has roundtrip flights from Indianapolis to New York City , during the first week in April, listed at $139, a record low.
For Friday March 19th through Tues March 23 we found a five day vacation to Jacksonville Florida on Travelocity.com for $323. That gets you a round trip ticket and a place to stay
If you are free March 14th through the 18th, Cheap Caribbean.com is offering a package deal to the Bahamas. A roundtrip flight and four nights at the Wyndham Nassau Resort for less than $300. Other weeks in April are available too, but most of the Sundays in April are blacked out. It's part of their 99 hour sale which ends at midnight Friday.
Many college students may not know this, but all year long, Airtran has a program just for you.It's called the Airtran U Standby program. If you are 18 to 22 years old, you can show up at the airport and if there's room on the plane, you can get a one-way ticket for $69 to $99. Just watch out for the black out dates.
