Man faces charges in alleged rental scam

Posted: Updated:

Indianapolis - A man faces charges after police say he posed as a landlord and took money from renters under false pretenses.

Police say Richard Swoveland posted a listing on Craigslist for a rental property that didn't belong to him. He met with several potential renters, at least two of whom gave him cash or a money order for the first month's deposit - nearly $800 in one case.

According to the police report, Swoveland told the renters that he represented the owner of the home.

In two incidents, police say Swoveland signed what appeared to be a rental agreement with the applicants. But later, they were contacted by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and learned that the home in question belonged to the government and was in the process of being sold.

Police are investigating alleged incidents in Marion and Hancock Counties.
