Indianapolis - Republican Helen Marchal says she has changed her mind about running for Marion County prosecutor.

Outgoing Prosecutor Carl Brizzi endorsed her shortly after announcing that he would not seek a third term.

In a statement released today, Marchal said she re-considered a condensed campaign and decided it would be the wrong thing for her young family.

Marchal was Brizzi's chief of staff.

In an email to Tom John, Republican Party chairman in Marion County, Marchal said she was withdrawing her application for the party's endorsement.

"Given the early deadline for filing for slating, and with the timing of Prosecutor Brizzi's decision not to run for re-election so close to that deadline, I was faced with a major decision impacting myself and my family (including my three children, under the age of 7), with a deadline of less than 48 hours," she wrote.

"On further reflection and consideration of the sobering realities of a condensed, nine-month campaign, for personal reasons, I thought it best to withdraw my candidacy."

"It's an important office. It's been well served for 16 years and we'll make sure we get a candidate who'll serve it for the next 16 years," John told Eyewitness News.

John sent an email to supporters in the wake of Marchal's decision, saying in part, "...Helen's withdrawal does present a challenge for the party.  Marion County Prosecutor is an office that is essential to ensuring that our streets are safe and that the good work of Mayor Ballard and IMPD is properly supported.  Thus, I am asking one of our stalwart members of our community and the Republican Party to assist us in ensuring that we have the best candidate for the Prosecutor's office.  I have asked Scott Newman to lead the charge to recruit a top flight candidate for Marion County Prosecutor."
