School bus involved in crash in Putnam County

Cloverdale - A school bus driver was injured when her bus struck a utility pole Tuesday afternoon. Four students were on the bus, but were not injured.

It happened on Stardust Road near State Road 231. The driver told police she hit a slick spot on the road, went off the road and overcorrected. The bus struck a utility pole head-on, snapping it and bringing down power lines.

The bus was transporting students from Cloverdale High School. Views from Chopper 13 showed front end damage to the bus, which landed partially on its side in a ditch.

A medic who was first on the scene made sure there were no power lines touching the bus and helped the students and driver evacuate through the back door.

The impact of the crash affected electricity in Cloverdale, with reports of lights flickering on and off all over town. Crews from Duke Energy are working to replace the broken utility pole.

"At first glance, I said, 'oh my,' and immediately someone yelled, 'Everyone is out of the bus,'" said an emergency responder at the scene.

The bus driver was taken to the hospital to be checked out for minor injuries. She will be tested for alcohol and drug use per school policy.

The parents of the students picked them up and all four are safely back home.
