Indianapolis - Gas prices are accelerating just as people get ready to pack the car for holiday travel.
Some prices shot up 15 cents overnight even though world oil prices are down slightly.
At 86th and Ditch, gas was going for $2.65 a gallon, one of the highest prices in the city. Indy gas prices shows the trend areawide - almost 80 cents more a gallon than this same day last year.
One motorist said she did not fill up today. "Only put 10 dollars in."
Not everyone is sharing the pain. The highest prices are around Lebanon at over $2.70 a gallon. The lowest prices in Martinsville and Indianapolis with prices in the middle.
University of Indianapolis Professor Matt Will says what could be happening: at the holidays we "always see an increase in demand and people are out traveling more this weekend and the prices increase anticipating that increased demand."
Even though prices are up over last Thanksgiving, AAA estimates two percent more motorists will hit the road this holiday over last.
One motorist said, "We have a family tradition of going up to Chicago for Thanksgiving." And she's seen those holiday spikes before. But she and other will still hit the road. "Gonna do it anyway. It's a family oriented holiday. So it's not going to matter."
After Thanksgiving fuel prices should dip again - until Christmas.
