Delphi boy in trouble for throwing Halloween candy at officer's car

Delphi - A police chief is standing by one of his officers after someone threw an object from an overpass at a patrol car on Halloween night.

Police say Officer Justin Wilson was on a routine patrol south on Washington Street. As he drove under an overpass, something hit the roof of his police car. Officer Wilson initially thought someone had shot at him.

"He wasn't sure. It startled him. He almost lost control of his vehicle," said Delphi Police Chief Justin Darling.

The officer chased down a 12-year-old boy who threw the object, which turned out to be a piece of hard candy. The boy's father says hish son did the wrong thing, but felt that Wilson was too aggressive. He says the patrolman used aggressive language, handcuffed his son and took him to jail.

Chief Darling says Wilson acted according to policy.

"According to our officer's report, he did not do anything outside regulations or duty. No one has filed any formal complaint alleging otherwise," Chief Darling said.

He says the officer's actions will be reviewed only if parents file a formal complaint, which they are considering.

The boy's parents weren't the only ones complaining about the officer's actions.

"The police officer was going extremely fast down our street. I was a little shocked. It was Halloween and the kids were everywhere," said one resident.

No charges have been filed yet against the boy. The prosecutor must review the case.
