Two Indianapolis students receive memorial scholarships

Indianapolis - One year ago, a community grieved the death of a teenager killed in a car accident. Now the family of Devon Stone is working to give back to the community by helping the future of two other students.

Jordan Hess and DJ Moore are students at Indianapolis Metropolitan High School. They both have a brighter future because of Devon, a teenager who never got the chance to see his dreams fulfilled.

Devon Stone was a 15-year-old Decatur Township High School student. He had a love for dirt bike racing. But his life was cut short when he was killed in a car accident. He was a passenger in a vehicle that hit an oncoming truck while trying to make a pass on Foltz Road in October 2008.

"Devon was always the champion of the underdog. He was expelled many times for fighting for someone who was made fun of by another child, or picking on another child," said Dala Stahley, Devon's grandmother.

Determined to honor her grandson's memory, Stahley looked for ways to help. She found purpose at Indianapolis Metropolitan High School.

"The look that she had in her eyes when she saw the school and saw what Devon's life might have been like had he been able to come to a school like this," said Scott Bess, Indianapolis Metropolitan High School.

The 15-year-old, who never reached his dream, will help Jordan Hess and DJ Moore reach theirs. Each were awarded a $4,000 Devon Stone Memorial Scholarship. One student will use it for an EMT class and the other for forensic photography.

"One of them was forensic photography and one was EMT. Devon would have thought that was cool. He would. He would have thought that was cool and I'm glad to be able to help them with the opportunity that he never had," said Stahley.
