Police step up patrols after rumors of gang threats

Steve Jefferson/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis - There will be even more increased patrols this weekend during Indiana Black Expo after Gang Task Force officers got wind of rumors about Latino gang threats against African-Americans.

Since the Hamilton Avenue murders, gang task force officers picked up street talk about retaliation. The rumors - and only rumors - include retaliation by Latino gangs during Black Expo weekend.

"Even rumors we always look at and take seriously. We have a very comprehensive plan to deal with any action that could occur," said Sgt. Matt Mount, Indianapolis Police Department spokesperson.

On June 1, prosecutors say Desmond Turner and James Stewart invaded a Hispanic family's home. After not finding money or drugs, detectives believe Turner shot and killed the family of seven, including three children.

Just like for every huge event, police presence will increase dramatically during Black Expo, mainly downtown. But officers want you on alert.

"If you see a group of Latinos that have come downtown to enjoy the festivities, that is nothing to get excited about. They want to participate just as many as any other group does," said Sgt. Mount.

It's not just downtown that will see an increase in police presence. IPD's east district stops at Shadeland Avenue. Marion County sheriff's deputies patrol everything east of Shadeland, and you'll see them out in full force too. Sheriff Frank Anderson has already assigned more east district deputies out east to areas like East 38th Street.

"Maybe wearing the same colors. They may have their clothes positioned a certain way. They may do similar things that set off some red flags," said Capt. Phil Burton, commenting on how police can tell a group of people could be in a gang.

Deputies will look for gang activity throughout Marion County. As far as justice in the Hamilton Avenue murders. "Let police do their job, let the justice system work in the Hamilton Avenue murders," said Sgt. Mount.

Police stress Black Expo is probably the safest place in the city because of the beefed up patrols. Police encourage residents to enjoy Black Expo and stay aware of your surroundings.
