Muncie - Muncie's mayor has ordered the layoff of five police officers following last week's layoff of 32 firefighters because of a large city budget shortfall.
The police officers being cut are rookies who were hired last month. The layoffs should save $340,000 in the police budget, with officers having already made more than $800,000 in concessions. Mayor Sharon McShurley said the layoffs should solve the city's budget shortfalls this year, but that more cutbacks could come next year when statewide property tax caps will cost local government more revenue.
Police Chief Deborah Davis says the department has operated with 98 officers for the past six months. She says as many as three clerks and secretaries could also be laid off from the department.
