ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - A police dog in Zionsville is making a remarkable recovery, just days after being struck by a truck.

K-9 Ofc. "Jelka" was playing ball with her partner, Zionsville Police Ofc. Josh Stutesman at the officer's home Monday evening when the ball was deflected into the street. Jelka gave chase and was struck by the passing pick-up.

She was rushed to MedVet, where she was treated for a compound fracture in her left hind leg and a hole in her abdomen.

"We are very hopeful she will come back to work but we do not know yet," Stutesman said. "It's still too early for the vet to tell us anything with 100% certainty but the vet is certainly optimistic."

Thursday, the department posted several photos to Facebook, saying Jelka continues to improve after several major surgeries for her injuries.

One of the posts included a video of Jelka bounding down the hallway.

"This video speaks volumes to just how STRONG of a fighter Jelka is. #ZPD is so very proud of this very special K-9. We so look forward to what comes next in your journey to recovery," Sgt. Adrian Martin wrote in the post.

Jelka, who just turned two, is a Belgian Malinois that was born in Sweden. She was paired with Ofc. Stutesman last August.
