Young alumni a challenge for college fundraisers

Purdue University is wasting no time trying to tap recent graduates as donors, but university leaders acknowledged the task is challenging.

The Journal and Courier reports about 14 percent of those who've graduated in the last 10 years have given gifts to Purdue totaling about $2 million. That's a sliver of the $300 million Purdue receives in gifts system-wide each year.

Purdue director of annual giving Tiffany Storm says younger alumni are harder to reach because they lack landlines. The university is reaching out to them through social media and other means, but Storm acknowledges Purdue is competing with other outlets for a smaller pool of disposable income.

Recent graduate Hillary Walker says she's more inclined to give to other groups because Purdue already has millions of dollars.
