WTHR-TV dominates July sweeps
INDIANAPOLIS, July 26—WTHR (Channel 13) announced today that according to preliminary Nielsen ratings from the recently concluded July 2012 sweeps, top-rated 13 Eyewitness News continues to gain news viewers while other stations show significant declines in key newscasts. Ratings were up year-to-year for all key WTHR newscasts, which dominated the competition at 4:30am, 5am, 5:30am, 6am, 5pm, 5:30pm, 6pm and 11pm.*
Sunrise rules the morning. From 4:30am to 7am (M-F) Eyewitness News Sunrise is the most-watched local morning newscast. During peak morning news viewing from 6am to 7am, Sunrise dominated while increasing viewership by 25% year-to-year. Its audience is 80% larger than either of its closest competitors, which both lost viewers from July 2011 to July 2012. FOX 59 News at 6am dropped nearly one fifth of its audience from last July with a 19% decline in ratings, while WISH-TV saw declines of 4% in the time period.
WTHR dominates evening news in Central Indiana. Number one and growing. Eyewitness News dominated each half hour from 5-6:30pm in July, ranking number one at 5pm (M-F) by scoring a 6.7 rating, with an astounding 34% increase year-to-year and a full three ratings points ahead of the nearest competitor WISH-TV's 3.7 rating. Eyewitness News at 5:30 is another dominant newscast, increasing audience by 28%. Eyewitness News at 6pm was also a big ratings winner with a 29% increase in rating, garnering a 10.2 rating and 20 share. That's more than double its closest competitor, WISH-TV with a 4.4 rating, a year-to-year decline of 10%.
Nightbeat owns the night. It's a similar success story at night, as Eyewitness News Nightbeat at 11pm was only late newscast to grow its share of viewers, earning an 8.2 rating and 16 share, up 14% year to year in share (M-F). Meanwhile, WISH-TV declined nearly 20% in share to a 4.8 rating and 9 share, with WRTV remaining relatively flat.
President and General Manager John Cardenas said, "It's exciting to see our hard work pay off and this gives us great momentum heading into the Olympics on WTHR. We're certainly grateful to the people of Central Indiana for continuing to make us their clear choice for news."
