Worker, 25, dies in Indianapolis industrial accident
A worker has died in an industrial accident on the Indianapolis east side.
It happened at BMAC Wireless in the 8500 block of Rawles Ave. Late Friday morning. The company sets up cell phone towers.
Police tell Eyewitness News a 25-year-old man was moving a 5,000-pound generator from a truck with a crane on it. Despite warnings by fellow workers to utilize the outriggers, the worker did not put out the legs to help stabilize the truck.
Underestimating the weight of the generator, the man picked up the generator and when it listed, he overcorrected. Intending to drop the load, he accidentally raised it further, toppling the crane onto its side.
The man unsuccessfully tried to run out of the way of the crane and was hit. The controls he was operating sit on the outside of the truck not inside the cab.
According to police, the employee worked for BMAC for one year and had a CDL license to operate heavy machinery. The company has 60 employees.
Family members were at the scene and the IMPD chaplain was called to assist. The worker's identity has not been released.
