The Marion County Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident where a female inmate was placed in a male block at the Marion County Jail.

MCSO Internal Affairs is investigating the incident.

The sheriff's department says there are no allegations of any misconduct by the inmates involved.

"The root of the problem is chronic jail overcrowding, which results in constant inmate movement through the various jail facilities. A modern jail, properly equipped with up-to-date technology which ensures proper separation of inmates, is the definitive corrective action. Upon completion of the investigation, Sheriff John Layton shall consider immediate remedial actions, including deputy discipline, a new color jump suit for Jail I females, and designating specific areas of Jail I as permanent female only areas," the sheriff's department said in a statement.
