Woman killed in downtown motorcycle crash involving off-duty IMPD officer

A woman has died after a motorcycle crash in downtown Indianapolis. 

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning on W Washington St just west of West St. 

Officer Chris Wilburn from IMPD says that there were two people riding on the bike. Wilburn confirms that the driver of the motorcycle was is an off-duty IMPD officer. Wilburn says that the passenger on the bike, a female, died at the scene. The driver, a male, was taken to Eskenazi hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say that the driver is a detective with IMPD and is approximately a 10-year veteran of the force. They say he had just purchased the bike two days ago. 

Police tell us that the woman killed was offered a ride home by the off-duty officer before the crash. Police say she was thrown from the bike and struck a pole.

Police also said that alcohol or speed are not believed to be factors in the crash. Police have found one helmet at the scene so far.
