MONTPELIER - Two people, including an infant, were killed in a crash with a train in Blackford County Saturday.

Police say a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Rodney Ray Brown, 29, of Montpelier, was traveling west on High Street in Montpelier when he crossed railroad tracks and was struck by a southbound train.

Kristen Janero, 22, and her 10-month-old son Xander were thrown from the back seat of the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the victims were not restrained by the car's seat belts. The infant was in his car seat, but was not secured in the vehicle.

Brown and his wife Angela, who was riding in the front seat, were taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where they are listed in stable condition.

An off-duty officer who witnessed the crash said the train's warning horn sounded and the crossing had working lights and bells.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
